The Government’s Shared Island initiative aims to harness the full potential of the Good Friday Agreement to enhance cooperation, connection and mutual understanding on the island and engage with all communities and traditions to build consensus around a shared future.
A shared sense of community across the island of Ireland can be achieved by fostering creative opportunities for connection through social interaction, engagement and dialogue.
Since 2023, the Creative Ireland Programme has invested €6 million across its five pillars, Creative Communities, Creative Youth, Creative Health and Wellbeing, Creative Climate Action and Creative Industries, to advance creativity on a shared island basis.
Creative Ireland’s Shared Island Conference, Creativity Connecting People, in Croke Park on Thursday November 13th celebrates and showcases the work and achievements of all the projects and individuals involved in the initiative since 2023.
Hosted by Dearbhail McDonald, the conference will feature addresses by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD and Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD; performances and exhibitions by Creative Ireland Shared Island projects, and discussion panels exploring themes, experiences, and learnings from the Shared Island initiative.

Micheál Martin has served as Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence from 17 December 2022 to 23 January 2025 and as Taoiseach from 27 June 2020 to 17 December 2022.
Previously, he has served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1992-93, and on the Fianna Fáil front bench and in four cabinet posts:
• Minister for Foreign Affairs (2008-2011)
• Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (2004-2008)
• Minister for Health (2000-04)
• Minister for Education (1997-2000)
Micheál was born in Turners Cross, Cork. He attended University College Cork where he qualified with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Patrick O'Donovan was appointed as Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport on the 23rd January 2025. He previously served in the Cabinet as Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science having been appointed in April 2024.
He is the Fine Gael TD for Limerick County having been first elected to the Dáil in 2011 and re-elected in 2016, 2020 and 2024. In 2020 he was appointed Minister for the Office of Public Works and in 2022 has was also appointed Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta, he held both offices until his appointment to Cabinet in 2024. He previously served as Minister of State in the Departments of Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform with responsibility for eGov and Public Procurement. He also served as Minister of State for Tourism and Sport.
Patrick worked as an Analytical Chemist, Health, Safety and Environment manager, industry consultant and primary teacher prior to his election to the Dáil.
Dearbhail McDonald is an author, journalist, broadcaster and documentary maker.
A global Eisenhower Fellow, Dearbhail has won a series of awards for her contribution to public affairs journalism including the Outstanding Achievement Award from the UCD Smurfit Business School, the Mary Cummins Award for Women of Outstanding Achievement in Media, a Dublin City University Special Alumni Achievement award, as well as several Law Society of Ireland Justice Media Awards for her legal affairs and business coverage.
Simon is a strategic service designer with a focus on co-creation, sustainability, behavioural change, public service and policy innovation. He works with local and national governments, NGOs, community groups and multinational companies.
